Product Description

The title of this publication, Rich Views, takes its name from the physical location of the Richview campus where the architecture facilities of UCD are held. Richview occupies a peripheral site within the grounds of the wider UCD Belfield campus; a geographical dislocation that fosters a feeling of alienation in the students and staff from the spirit (and funding) of the wider institution. At the same time, they are disconnected from the city; a conceptual place that occupies much of their intellectual learning, and a physical site that often serves as the backdrop for their imagined designs.

Despite all this ostensible independence from the outside world, Richview is in fact both well regarded and well known within the insular community of the architecture world, boasting the first female winners of the Pritzker Prize in Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell of Grafton Architects. In part due to this newfound recognition, and also through the incredible work of the Building Change initiative that is engaging all six architecture schools in Ireland to radically reshape climate literacy and action in the curriculum, Richview has enjoyed a recent influx of internationally renowned practitioners in the field of sustainable design who have sparked much critical stimulation on how and why we build in the face of the global climate emergency.

This publication, Rich Views, is one such initiative to come from the Building Change project, however it is also borne from the desires of the students of Richview to establish a dialogue with the world outside of architecture, offering a channel where a wide range of critical reflections on societal topics such as construction practices, demolition processes, biodiversity, art, architecture culture, and humour can be voiced, and potentially responded to.
